Personality:
Gilbert's seemingly favourite thing to do is talk about himself and proclaim his awesomeness to the world. He will never pass up a chance to assert his superiority, even if he actually has no experience in whatever it is he is claiming to be superior at. He makes competitions out of almost everything, no matter how trivial and will brag about "winning." Even though he appears to be egotistical in the extreme, he has an easy-going quality about him that makes him likable; he may claim that he is the best at everything, but his claims are so outrageous that they're oftentimes amusing.
On top of his egotism, Gilbert has a good sense of humour and is always willing to make people laugh. He doesn't mind being teased in return and gives as good as he gets. Although he may seem immature, he is actually very intelligent and can hold his own in a serious debate just as well as anything else. However, due to the fact that he didn't have much of a childhood, he prefers to be happy and childish now that he is able to be.
One of his favourite things to do is push people buttons. He's really not out to do anything malicious, he honestly just likes seeing how flustered he can make even the most stone-faced people. This often results in messing with his teachers, but he knows when to back down and how to talk himself out of really getting in any serious trouble beyond a scolding.
Gilbert often says he is perfectly fine being alone and even enjoys it, but that couldn't be farther than the truth. He spent a substantial part of his life either alone or in the company of people he wished would leave him alone. Being by himself only reminds him of things he would rather forget, although he doesn't want anyone to know about that, hence the reason he claims he is fine flying solo. His daily life is a direct contradiction of that fact, however, since he is very rarely seen without his friends, his brother, his boyfriend, or one or more of his "fanclub."
Although he seems self-absorbed, Gilbert actually cares very much for the people he is close to, and would do anything it took to keep them safe. He has the stereotypical "big brother" complex and is possessive and overly-protective of everyone he cares about. This stems from his perceived failure in the past and his desire to see everyone around him healthy and happy. He's been through so much that he believes he can deal with it whereas others he loves shouldn't have to bear the burden. It's not that he finds his loved ones weak; rather, he would just like them to be happy while he carried whatever was weighing them down.
Being that he's been on his own since a very young age, Gilbert is attending school mostly due to scholarships. His grandfather helps as much as possible, but Gilbert doesn't like taking hand-outs and would rather do things on his own merits. He doesn't care much for school (outside of classes he takes for his major), but he doesn't have to put forth much effort to get good grades; he's naturally intelligent.
History:
Gilbert was born to parents who were superstitious and obsessed with perfection. Thus, having an albino son was seen as a curse instead of a blessing. The first three years of his life, before it was certain that his parents would have another heir, he was given the basic necessities for survival; he was fed daily, given clean clothes, and a bed. His parents often ignored him beyond that, but his life would change drastically upon the birth of his brother, Ludwig. Ludwig was exactly what their parents wanted; healthy, blonde haired, blue eyed and male. Gilbert was quickly forgotten in favour of the baby, but instead of resenting the boy, he loved his little brother, happy to have the attention off him.
Even though he was just shy of four, Gilbert learned to take care of himself. He stole food from the fridge when his parents weren't looking and was skinny enough to fit into clothes meant for younger toddlers. He slept in a small unused closet on a pile of old pillows and blankets he found around the house. When it was time for school, his parents begrudgingly enrolled him but he had to walk there himself; luckily it was only two blocks away.
Gilbert's grandfather, who had been estranged from the family, saw him walking home from school and started getting close to his grandson; Gilbert had an incredible mistrust of adults at the time, so it took awhile for him to come around. For a few years, his life improved with help from his grandfather, who he called Old Fritz so his parents wouldn't figure out who had been helping him, and with regularly made lunch and dinner as well as frequent trips for clothes, Gilbert had an almost normal childhood.
However, when he was nine, his grandfather became ill and due to his intense worry for the only family he had who he cared about other than Ludwig, Gilbert let slip who had been helping him. His parents had rarely hit him, usually only when they found him taking food for himself, but now their neglect became full-on abusive. Because it was over the summer, Gilbert was kept in the house and banned from the outside world and frequently abused. The only thing that saved him was Ludwig, who would become upset if he discovered his parents mistreating his beloved older brother.
Finally unable to handle the mistreatment, Gilbert said goodbye to his brother, took as much as he could carry in a pillowcase, and ran away. He wasn't sure if his parents would actually come looking for him, but as a precaution he went across town where he hoped his parents wouldn't bother to look. For years he lived mostly on his own; although his grandfather eventually recovered and offered to take him in, he didn't feel safe living there in case his parents decided to try and find him (which they did, hoping he was with Frederick so they could get him in legal trouble, too) so he lived off what little money his grandfather could spare and went to alternative educational facilities (which he just referred to as 'poor kid schools').
As soon as he was able to, he got a job so that he didn't have to rely so much on his grandfather, actually working to pay him back for all he had done. Gilbert wanted to stand on his own and be successful, determined to show his parents they were wrong about him. Around the age of 13, Gilbert finally admitted to being near-sighted because of his albinism, though he rarely wore the glasses old Fritz had gotten for him, especially because of how badly he was teased by the other teenagers he lived around and went to school with, though he never got rid of them altogether as they were a gift. Due to his small stature, he was bullied quite often and frequently the target of violence, but because of his past with his parents and the training (mostly fencing) with his grandfather and due to his own quick reflexes, Gilbert quickly became an expert at defending himself against even the toughest opponents, though the constant violent around him definitely took its toll.
Luckily, one of Gilbert's teachers realized his potential and convinced him to take the entrance exams necessary to be accepted to several colleges that would get him off the streets. Due to his exceptional intelligence, he was awarded several scholarships, but the most prestigious was from Bluterra. Backed by his teacher and his grandfather, he accepted the scholarship. He nearly lost it his freshman year due to his frequent slacking and simply being unused to a mainstream school. However, his determination would not let him fail and he fought and brought his grades up enough to be taken off probation.
Since then, Gilbert has managed to pull mostly A's with little effort, having adjusted to school life. He was overjoyed to learn that his brother, who he had done his best to keep in contact with, would be joining him at the school. He also met Roderich during his time at the school and managed to find someone outside of his grandfather and brother he could trust, along with his two best friends Antonio and Francis.
Sample Post:
The sun greeted Gilbert as it shone in through his blinds, waking him almost instantly; he had been a light sleeper for as long as he could remember. Rubbing his eyes irritably, he glanced at his clock, annoyed when he had to squint to see the numbers. It was just past 8 in the morning; he had hoped to sleep in a little later as he had been up rather late the previous night.
Running a hand through his messy hair, Gilbert sighed; there was no going back to sleep once he was awake. And, on the plus side, the cafeteria was nearly empty at this time of the morning and he wouldn't have to wait long to get food. The pancakes were fresher, too, and that simple thought made it impossible to be grumpy.
Stretching and standing up, the Prussian pulled on whatever he came across first, pulling his red hoodie on last. He was being almost unusually quiet that morning; he would normally blast his music (hey, if he had to be up at 8, whoever he "accidentally" woke up could deal with it too) and check his blog before doing anything else, but on mornings like this he took care not to make much noise.
Grabbing his keys off the desk, he padded back over to his bed and smiled at the still-sleeping brunette. Pulling the blinds shut so the sun didn't wake him up, Gilbert leaned down and kissed the other's forehead. "I'll be back soon. Ich liebe dich, Roddy," he whispered before heading off to the cafeteria to get himself the biggest stack of pancakes he could afford.
